About the Co-Leads
Dr. Nicole M. Merola is the Department Head of Literary Arts & Studies and an associate professor of Ecocriticism & American Literature at RISD. Professor Merola holds a BA with honors from Swarthmore College and an MA and PhD from the University of Washington. In her teaching and research Dr. Merola focuses on contemporary environmental literary, visual, and material culture. In particular, she is interested in thinking, teaching, and writing about the Anthropocene, biodiversity and extinction, climate change, critical animal studies, green film studies, theories of natureculture, and the intersections of science, literature and art.
Cas Holman is an associate professor in Industrial Design at RISD and a play designer. Professor Holman holds a BA from the University of California Santa Cruz and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. In her teaching and professional practice Holman explores scales of manufacturing, using emerging technologies to make small-batch production and distribution feasible for independent designers and small companies. Her courses engage the design and production process as the product itself. She works alongside her students to find form through sketching, playing, tinkering, critique, prototyping and testing.
